The match between RKC Waalwijk and Ajax Amsterdam was canceled shortly before the end of normal time. A serious collision between RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen and Ajax striker Brian Bobbey led to this decision by the referee team.
Vaessen was seriously injured during the action and had to be immediately treated by medical personnel. Immediately after the collision, the goalkeeper remained motionless. The 28-year-old’s condition is currently unclear.
Players from both teams were visibly distraught and formed a circle to protect their privacy before he was eventually carried off the field on a stretcher.
RKC Waalwijk later confirmed the abandonment of the match in a press release.
