SV Werder extended VfL Wolfsburg’s curse at home in the Bundesliga and extended their own successful streak away from home this season. With the 4:2 (1:1) victory against Lower Saxony, achieved thanks to a good second half, Bremen celebrated their third victory in their fourth away match and climbed to eighth place in the ranking after the seventh day. The Wolfsburg team has been waiting for a successful experience in the Volkswagen Arena for more than five months.
Tiago Tomás (19th) gave the hosts the lead with a curious goal in front of 28,917 spectators. Shortly before the break, Bremen equalized thanks to Mitchell Weiser (45th + 5). After the break, Werder could no longer be stopped. Felix Agu (51st), Marvin Ducksch (67th) and Marco Grüll (72nd) achieved the deserved victory. Patrick Wimmer (68th) from Wolfsburg received a red card for serious misconduct just three minutes after his substitution. Joakim Maehle from Wolfsburg (79th) scored the last point.
Bremen got off to a better start and dominated the match from the start. They tried again and again to fill the midfield quickly. After just a few seconds, Marco Grüll wasted a scoring opportunity for the visitors. The shot of his Austrian compatriot Romano Schmid (4th) was deflected.
Little by little, the hosts also found their place in the match. Jakub Kaminski’s (13th) shot attempt from 20 meters went beyond the goal. Wolfsburg’s lead thanks to Tomás’ goal six minutes later was boosted by an error by Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
He failed to completely hit the ball after a corner from Maximilian Arnold. Their defenders were unable to clear the ball and Tomás backheeled into the goal. Sixth goal of the season for Lower Saxony after a standard situation. The leadership of the VfL was surprising at the time. But coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team then won 1-0. The most dangerous actions came from the wolves. The Algerian Mohammed Amoura, Wolfsburg’s best trainer, particularly caused a sensation. Kaminski (40th) failed from a promising position after Amoura’s decisive pass to the Werder Zetterer goalkeeper. Just when it looked like Wolfsburg would take the lead at halftime, Bremen equalized through Weiser. By then Wolfsbug captain Maximilian Arnold was no longer on the field.
VfL captain Arnold injured and suspended
The midfielder was injured when he fell after a header. Because, according to referee Daniel Schlager, he left the field too slowly, he received his fifth yellow card (42nd) and is suspended for the next match. Bremen was also forced to change. Defender Anthony Jung injured his right thigh and was replaced by Amos Pieper.
Werder left the locker room with momentum. Marvin Ducksch (48th) miserably missed the opportunity to take the lead when he was alone. Three minutes later, he helped make the score 2-1 with a one-two with Grüll. The Austrian failed due to a strong reaction from Kamil Grabara and, on Agu’s subsequent shot, the ball slipped under the body of the VfL goalkeeper and into the goal.
The game has become wilder and more entertaining. Wolfsburg pushed, Werder countered – and how. Ducksch, who had not had any luck until then, scored first (67th), and shortly after Grüll, who was getting better and better, also scored (72nd). When he scored, Wolfsburg were already outnumbered after the red card. Maehle’s goal to make the score 2:4 only made the result a little more bearable for Wolfsburg.
