The Jupiler Pro League constitutes an interesting market for Bundesliga clubs, as recently shown by the transfers of Victor Boniface (23 years old) and Antonio Nusa (19 years old). In the Belgian championship, market values have been adjusted and Germans Christos Tzolis (22) from FC Bruges and Paris Brunner (18) from Cercle Bruges also received an update.
The most valuable player in the championship remains Brugge Andreas Skov Olsen (24 years old), with a market value of 18 million euros. In second place is his teammate Raphael Onyedika (23), who is the big winner of the update with an increase of 6 million euros. “Onyedika directs the play in midfield and BVB had big problems with him in the Champions League. Former coach Ronny Deila used him less, current coach Nicky Hayen lets him exploit his full potential. This summer, Bruges even rejected an offer of 20 million euros from Galatasaray,” explains Bart Tamsyn, Area Manager Belgium at (Site notre blog d’information), about the defensive midfielder, who is now worth 16 million euros.
From second place, he pushes back Kévin Denkey (23 years old), from his local rival, Cercle Bruges, which is devalued from 16 million to 14 million. “This summer, Cercle wanted to sell it for 16 million euros, but could not find a buyer. “That led us to decide that the market value was too high,” Tamsyn said of the striker, who scored 23 goals in 28 league appearances last season. Only Anders Dreyer (26) from RSC Anderlecht and Viktor Djukanovic (20) from Standard Liège received a bigger devaluation than Denkey. While Dreyer’s market value drops from 15 million to 12 million euros, that of Djukanovic drops from 2.5 million to 4.5 million euros.
Bruges and Genk are the big winners – Anderlecht loses
The biggest gainers by market value in Belgium play for FC Brugge and KRC Genk. Onyedika’s teammates Maxim De Cuyper (23 years old) and Joel Ordóñez (20 years old) each increase by 3 million to reach 12 million and 9 million euros respectively. At Genk, goalkeeper Mike Penders (19), who joined Chelsea this summer for 20 million and was loaned, will receive an increase of 4 to 5 million euros. Konstantinos Karetsas (16) and Jarne Steuckers (22) are worth €7 million after the update, which is an increase of €3 million in both cases.
These developments are also reflected in the team’s values. With an increase of 14.45 million euros, Brugge consolidates its position as leader of the Jupiler Pro League and increases the value of its squad to 151.7 million euros. Only KRC Genk sees a bigger increase, whose team value has increased by €21.7 million to €95.3 million and is now the third most valuable in the league. While 15 of the 16 teams increased their squad value, only world champions RSC Anderlecht saw a devaluation of €6.6 million. “During the last transfer period, seven of the ten most valuable professionals left the league. It gave others the chance to get noticed,” Tamsyn comments on the market value update.
Some professionals known in Germany are also under contract in Belgium. Tzolis, who moved from Fortuna Düsseldorf to FC Brugge this summer for 6.5 million euros, increased his value from 10 million to 12 million euros. Former BVB talent and U17 world champion Brunner received his first market value after joining Cercle Brugge in the summer and is now valued at €1.5 million.
This is how transfer market values work
Transfer market values are created taking into account different pricing models as well as strong involvement of the transfer market community, which discusses the values in detailed discussions. The market values of transfers generally cannot be equated to the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer arrangements and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples will be here listed. (Site notre blog d’information) does not use an algorithm (for a detailed definition of market value).
