The Hungarian side between the years 1950- 1954 is arguably the greatest side to have ever played in the history of world football. Between 1950 to 1954, Hungary lost only one match, unfortunately for them that single match happened to be the 1954 world cup final. The Hungarian side of 1954 is also known as the ‘magical magyars’ and in Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis they had a deadly striking partnership. Hungary however has been crowned Olympic champions on three occasions, 1952, 1964 and 1968, and in the year 1953 they became the first foreign side to defeat England on English soil.
The 1954 world cup finals was a great time period for the national side, en route to the 1954 world cup final they smashed West Germany 8-3 in a group match, Hungary were confident of winning when the two nations once again met in the world cup final. Amazingly, Hungary surrendered a two goal advantage and allowed the Germany to crawl back and win the tie 3-2.
Ferenc Puskas is considered by many as one of the greatest football players of all time. Puskas had a deadly left foot and to this day he is still the nation’s top scorer with 82 goals. Puskas was Hungary’s captain and later was allowed to play for Spain due to residency there.
Another major highlight of Hungary’s career is considered to be winning the 1964 Olympics as Hungary defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final. They won the Olympics again four years later as they beat Bulgaria 4-1 in the final.
